port window frame

Postby h. vilstrup » Wed Mar 10, 2010 9:24 pm

hello,
i have an early prelude name MUDDUR (little knife on the faroes), one of the two in denmark, bought via the net in southern england. it lacks its port window frame which does'nt look good. the starboard frame is the original of aluminium, screwed on. can anybody tell me how to acquire a port window frame (or both sides)?
best wishes from denmark, at the moment deep frozen

Welcome to the site.

I cannot help you as the later Preludes did not have frames round the windows. they were moulded into the Fibeglass but I am sure someone will have some ideas for you.

Best regards

Dear Hendrik

Our boat is one of the earlier Preludes (number 68), and our window frames (on the outside I mean), are made of fibreglass, although they look lke aluminium as they are coloured silver. I don't know if all the earlier boats are like this, certainly a quick look on the gallery on this site gives the impression that they are all the same. Anyway, i guess it must be possible to create a mold and make a new one. Perhaps you could make a plaster-of-paris mold from the same frame on the other boat, then use that to lay-up a new frame ?

Hope that helps.

Nick

That would work on the Pandora range but not on the Prelude or Pirates, as the window frames are "opposite handed" meaning one is the mirror image of the other. If they WERE made from alluminium, they could be made the same unless you have the screw holes countersunk, which would again make them handed. Are Pegasus yachts still trading, or have they folded?. If they are still trading, or if Oulton manufacturing are still going, they might be able to make you a new one. Regards ...................Neil.

Pegasus disappeared some years ago now. I beleive the old yard is going become waterside flats.

Hi Neil, yes of course you are quite right, silly me ! Now I think about it, why bother laying it up in grp - it could be done in good quality ply. The simplest thing to to would be to make a paper template of the good one, trace that out onto the ply, then cut around it. I sppose you could even do it with strips of ply rather than a solid sheet - less wasteful. I reckon it would work, the ply would just need the outside corners rounding off. Probably need 12mm ply or something of that nature. It seems reasonable to assume that the side elevation view of the frame is the same on both sides. What do you think ? The ply should be able to take the curve of the cabin side. Nick.

Hi Nick, That sounds quite feasable actually. I`ve got to replace one of the large frames on Mistral (my Pandora International), and i`d thought about taking the good one off, and making a mould from it, and then making a GRP one, but i must admit the Marine ply idea sounds good. I`ve got to replace all the windows anyway, so it would be a good time to try things out. Regards .....................Neil.
